If your new to oil painting, it’s normal to have a lot of questions. When I first started, I had many of the same questions myself. Below are some common questions beginners ask when they begin learning how to paint with oils.
Do I need expensive brushes to start?
No. Beginners only need a few basic brushes such as a 2-inch brush, a 1-inch brush, and a round brush. I would also include a palette knife. Later on you can include a fan brush also.1See my article, The Only Brushes You Really Need to Start, in the Articles section.
What is the wet-on-wet technique?
The wet-on-wet technique means painting directly onto a canvas that already has a thin wet base layer. This allows colors to blend easily and helps beginners create landscapes without waiting for layers to dry. I explain this more in detail in Why the Wet-on-Wet Technique Is a Great Way for Beginners to Start Oil Painting in the articles section.
Do I need Liquid White or Liquid Clear to start?
A thin coat of Liquid White or Liquid Clear helps the paint move smoothly across the canvas when using the wet-on-wet technique. Only a very small amount is needed. If too much is applied, the paint can become runny and difficult to control. I recommend starting with the clear version. Reason for this the clear keeps your colors brighter. How long does the oil paint take to dry?
Oil paint dries slowly compared to other types of paint. Depending on how thick the paint is applied, it can take several days or even weeks to fully dry. This slower drying time allows painters to blend colors and make adjustments while painting.
Can I finish an oil painting in one day?
Yes, many painters finish the painting in one session when using the wet-on-wet method. However, you do not have to rush. Oil paint stays workable long enough that you can return to the painting where you left off many days later or in some cases weeks.
What is the easiest subject for beginners?
Simple landscapes are usually the easiest. Skies, water, mountains, and trees are great subjects because they help you learn blending and brush control.
How do I clean the brushes properly?
Cleaning your brushes properly is important if you want them to last. Make sure to remove all paint and clean them thoroughly after each use. Using odorless paint thinner. You will need a lot of rags or paper towels.
Do I need to prime the canvas before painting?
Most canvases you buy are already primed and ready to use. They are primed, but you’re not ready to start just on a primed canvas. You can start painting after applying a thin layer of liquid clear or whatever medium you prefer to use. If the canvas has not been primed, you must prime it with gesso.
How many colors do I need to start?
You don’t need many colors; a nice beginner set will do just fine. You can mix colors to make different tones. It will be explained in detail in the articles section. Affordable Oil Paint Brands for Beginners (And How to Check Pigment Quality)
Is oil painting hard to learn?
Oil painting takes practice, but it does not need to be complicated. With the right tools and technique, beginners can learn and improve over time. For more information see: Why Wet-on-Wet Technique Is a Great Way for Beginners to Start Oil Painting
What is the easiest way to start oil painting as a beginners?
The easiest way to start oil painting is to keep it simple. Use a small set of brushes, a few basic colors, and practice on inexpensive canvas or canvas panels. My preference is always a stretched primed canvas. Many places on line have value packs,or you can check your local hobby store. Start with the basic subjects like skies, trees, or mountains, or a basic landscape painting. Focus on learning brush control and color mixing instead of trying to paint complicated scenes right away. That will all come in time. Don’t worry about perfection. Save your practice material, and first paintings, and as you progress go back and compare what you have done now to when you first started and you should see a difference.
What is the best paint thinner for cleaning oil painting brushes?
Beginners should use an orderless mineral spirits made for artists when cleaning oil painting brushes. It works well for removing paint and is safer and less harsh than many traditional solvents. Avoid hardware-store thinners unless they are clearly safe for art use. Many painters also use brush soap after thinning to fully clean and condition the brushes.
What are the popular paint thinner brands for beginners?
- Gamsol
- Winsor & Newton Sansodor
- Weber Oderless Turpenoid
- Mona Lisa Oderless Paint Thinner
Remember after cleaning with the thinner, its recommended to wash your brushes with brush wash and warm water to help keep bristles soft and in good shape.
Why is my oil painting cracking?
Oil paintings usually crack when layers dry unevenly or when too much oil is used in upper layers too soon. One of the most common causes is ignoring the fat over lean rule, which means each new layer should contain slightly more oil paint than the layer underneath.
Cracking can also happen from applying thick paint over paint that is still drying, using poor-quality materials, or exposing the painting to extreme temperature and humidity changes.
To help prevent cracking, allow layers to dry properly, build paint gradually, and use quality materials whenever possible. Beginners often get better long-term results by keeping early layers thinner and simpler.
Can I Use Acrylic Paint with Oil Paint?
Yes and No:
Yes: You can use acrylic paint for underpainting. This means you would use acrylic paint for your first layer of paint on your canvas, letting it dry completely before applying oil paint on top.
No: You cannot put acrylic paint over oil paint.
What is a Palette Knife Used for?
Mixing colors on the palette and sometimes applying paint directly to the canvas for texture and mountain formations.
Can I Use the Same Brush for Light and Dark Colors?
Its good practice to use separate brushes for light and dark colors, to avoid muddy brown, or grayed-out, unintentionally. For information on proper brush cleaning, see. How To Clean Oil Paint Brushes Properly
